Accessibility

Wrongstep aims to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, level AA. Conformance is checked while the site is built rather than audited afterwards.

Every text colour was measured against the background it sits on, and the ratios are recorded in a comment at the top of the site’s stylesheet so they can be checked rather than taken on trust. Body text is at least 4.5:1 everywhere.

The whole site turns on a distinction between two kinds of step, and that distinction is never carried by colour alone. Every stretch of every path has a written label and an arrow direction as well as a colour: two arrowheads mean it can be taken back apart, one arrowhead means it cannot.

The hero path has a plain-text equivalent printed directly underneath it, listing which steps can be undone and which cannot, with the reason.

• There are exactly two moving things on the site, and both of them mean something.
• Both are switched off completely when your system asks for reduced motion, and nothing is lost when they are: both are described in words as well.
• Nothing autoplays, nothing flashes, and nothing moves without being asked to.

• One thing per screen on the confirm-before cards. Type stays large rather than shrinking on small screens.
• Tap targets are large enough to hit with a knuckle.
• No interaction needs two hands, a fine point or a steady hover.
• Everything works from the keyboard, in a sensible order, with a visible focus outline that is a square bracket of ink rather than a faint ring.
• The grading runs on your own device, so it keeps working when the signal does not, and your place survives closing the tab.
• There is a print stylesheet, because the confirm-before card is often propped against a wall.

Every illustration on the site has alt text, and no illustration carries information that is not also written out. Everything that carries a reading — the paths, the arrows, the cards — is drawn in code with a text description attached, not supplied as a picture.

One wide drawing, the twenty-four-stretch path, scrolls sideways inside its own box on a narrow screen. It carries a full text description and the same information is written out underneath it, but the sideways scroll is not ideal and is on the list.
